A Stray Bullet and a Happy Old Year!

Thursday, December 29, 2011. 60 mph, 4-Lane Highway, Rural Tennessee...Without Warning -  GLASS SHATTERED! NOISE and WIND EXPLODED!  SOUNDS OF  BABY CRYING and WIND RUSHING,TOTAL CONFUSION FOR SEVERAL SECONDS...

We pulled over and realized quickly that we could hear gunfire - and that very likely a stray bullet had passed through the van right in front of Jessica and me! WOW! It is still setting in what a gift God blessed us with in the timing of seconds. Had we been going a little faster - the bullet would have passed through further back in the van, endangering all of us more intensely.
The story goes like this...It seems that two persons were target shooting in a field without a proper backstop, less than 75 yards from a major highway. Needless to say, anyone who owns a handgun should know better - but this incident is just proof that there are gun owners who don't - or they ignore what they have been taught.
I called 911 - and then we sat or rather crouched on the far side of the van and listened to semi-automatic gunfire for the next 5-10minutes till the first Police Unit arrived. He directed us to a safer location and they moved in on the location. We are so thankful for the two men that stopped to make sure we were okay. They, like us, were in disbelief.
It seems that the incident - (too innocent a term for something that nearly killed us) - ended with 2 Felony Charges of Reckless Endangerment, Handcuffs, a ride in the Paddywagon, and a $1000 Bond with the bonus of at least one night in jail.
We are thankful to those that were praying for us during our Christmas Week travel. God is good, and we are most thankful for His Protection. A matter of inches would have made a huge difference. As a family member said, "Any other outcome would not have been a good one." The loss of two windows is acceptable when faced with the alternative.
Happy New Year!
